Lions drop final two games in Omaha

Omaha, Neb. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team lost both ends of a double-header today at Nebraska-Omaha, falling 9-0 and 4-2 to the Mavericks in the final two games of the weekend series.

Southern (16-22, 12-20 MIAA) managed just four hits on Omaha (24-11, 20-11 MIAA) pitchers Zach Croonquist and Andrew Reck in game one. Dallas Burke, Patrick Deao, Tee Helsel and Zach Campbell all had a hit each for the Lions in the game.

Omaha led 1-0 after four innings, but an eight-run fifth inning did in the Lions. Cody Griebling threw the first four and two thirds of an inning, while Grant Conrad and Ryan Taylor threw in relief.

A four-run first inning in game two proved to be enough for the Mavericks in the nightcap.

Omaha sent nine batters to the plate in the first with the big hit coming from a three-run home run off the bat of Trevor Gapa.

Lions' starter Brett Abell settled down and held the Mavericks scoreless for six more innings and Tyler Jinks threw a perfect eighth with a strikeout. Abell struck out two over seven innings.

Cullen Baxter had a pair of hits, while Dane Kolkmeyer, Helsel, Burke and Jesse Kinzey had a hit each. Kinzey and Helsel scored a run each.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend with double-headers on both Friday and Saturday.
