Southern student-athletes represented well on MIAA Academic Honors list
Kansas City, Mo. -- A total of 130 Missouri Southern student-athletes were listed on the 2013 MIAA Academic Honor Roll as the conference announced the recipients of that award, as well as the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Academic Excellence Award.
To be named to the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must be on the active roster of his/her team and possess a cumulative 3.00 GPA or higher. They must also have earned that GPA in at least two semesters of enrollment at the school.
The Lions had 130 student-athletes earn Academic Honor Roll honors this season. Football led the teams with 24 student-athletes named to the list, while women's track and field/cross country had 21 members and women's soccer and softball had 15 each. Volleyball had the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the list with 92 percent of the roster earning honors.
A total of nine student-athetes earned the MIAA Scholar-Athlete award. To earn this honor, you must have maintained at least a cumulative 3.50 GPA and have been named All-MIAA in your respective sport. Football's Kellen Cox, Ryon Phillips and Alex Wong were named, as well as men's track and field/cross country runner Jake Benton. Women's track and field/cross country had Kaitlyn Belisle, Jasmin Hughes, Ashleigh McFarland and Brittani Reagan, while soccer's Candis Clark earned the honor, as well.
Four student-athletes earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award which is given to a student-athlete that maintains a cumulative 4.00 GPA. Soccer's Michaela Altvater and Hannah Ishmael, as well as volleyball's Abby Finder and football's Giresse Forchu picked up honors.
